On January 27th, 1938, Charles  II of Romania decreed setting up "an airport in Craiova, which would also serve as a military aerodrome, in case of war...". Starting with that year, Craiova Airport "assigned to public air passenger and merchandise transport" functioned on the actual location.

Between 1950 and 1952, was built a concrete landing path, with the dimensions of 2000 x 60 m and were made the first endowments  by means of the approach and landing, consisting of 2 NDBs.
On May the 6th 1957, was opened the first airline Craiova-Bucharest, disposing of Russian LI-2 planes. In 1959, was built the building that houses the traffic control nowadays and the airport's dispatcher,  the aircrafts  AN-2 being used  until 1962, when it began the  usage of the modern aircrafts (for those years) type IL-14. This type of aircraft has served the race Craiova- Bucharest until 1972. Between 1959-1972, the landing path was extended to the dimensions  of 2500 x 60 m, and there was also built  a 380 x 14 m runway and a 75 x 110 m embarcation - debarcation platform, both made of concrete.

Between 1972 - 1989, the Craiova - Bucharest route was served by planes type AN-24 and IL-18; there were built the technical body, the waiting room for passengers, the emission center and the protocol hall of the airport.
The 1989 revolution and the market economy in Romania led to a decrease of the number of flights from TAROM company, which meant the ceasing of the intern regular flights, beginning with 1994.  Starting with 1995,  Craiova Airport has been opened to intern and international traffic, serving charter flights only. Starting with 29 th March 2007, the flights of the Carpatair company on Craiova Timisoara route have been oficially launched, to  15 destinations in Italy, Greece and Germany.The entire region located in the southwest of Romania, will provide the fastest and most comfortable transport route towards other destinations in Europe.
